Trauma and your life
The official medical definition used to diagnose trauma is:
"It is caused by a stressful occurrence that is outside the range of normal human experience."
It goes on to develop this to include:
"Serious threat to personal life or risk of serious personal physical damage or that of a family member or close friend".
But what is "normal human experience"? 30 years ago, very few people were exposed to road rage, muggings and shootings, but now in some communities these are common place!
This diagnosis defines the threat to be of a physical nature not emotional or mental.
Biology of belief
Scientific evidence shows that accidents, falls, illness and even parent's divorcing, causes changes in cellular biology which result in cellular trauma. The body, conscious and subconscious mind perceives a whole range of "normal" activities as a threat and will react accordingly.
The result of this is that every time you are exposed to the same "threat" or even perceived threat; your cells will react and produce a change at cellular level. Thus reinforcing your reaction – emotion, stress, fear, and illness – what ever it may be.
Traditional talk therapy asks you to 'relive' the trauma and reflect on the event. The principle being you need to analyse and assess before you can move on.
Things to consider
Science now shows us this re-creates the cellular reaction again, just reinforcing the trauma! Is this why talk therapy takes so long to make such small changes?
